Managing Chronic Kidney Disease in Big Cats
Supporting the long‑term health and comfort of our rescued big cats
World Kidney Day is a reminder of how essential healthy kidneys are, not only for people but also for animals. For non-domestic felines, including lions, tigers and leopards living at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, kidney health plays a crucial role in overall well-being. Kidneys are extraordinary organs, made up of millions of nephrons that filter toxins, regulate hydration, balance electrolytes, support blood pressure, and contribute to red blood cell production. When they begin to fail, the effects are felt throughout the body.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common age-related conditions in cats, and this vulnerability can extend to big cats in captivity. As obligate hypercarnivores, felines naturally consume a protein-rich diet and processing these high levels of protein places additional strain on their kidneys over time. Some research also suggests that genetic factors, anatomy, dental disease, and viral infections may contribute to the development of CKD, although the exact reasons remain unclear, cats are more prone to kidney problems than many other species. What is well understood is that older big cats require diligent ongoing management to maintain comfort and quality of life, especially if they have been diagnosed with CKD. LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary is home to many elderly big cats who did not receive proper veterinary care before rescue. As they age, our commitment to their health becomes even more vital. Each day, our team prepares medications designed to support kidney function and ease the symptoms of CKD if required. Those medications cannot reverse the condition, but they slow its progression, reduce discomfort and help maintain appetite, hydration and energy levels. With consistent care, our ageing residents remain active enough to explore their spacious enclosures, enjoy enrichment activities and rest peacefully under the African sun.
World Kidney Day is an opportunity to recognise the importance of this work and honour the resilience of the big cats who depend on it. At LIONSROCK, every carefully measured dose is part of our promise to provide comfort, dignity and a life filled with calm, safety and compassion.
