Why Big Cat Dental Health Matters?
Discover how specialised dental procedures, extractions, and root canals help protect the long-term health of LIONSROCK’s big cats
Dental health plays a crucial role in a big cat’s overall welfare. Painful or damaged teeth can make it difficult for the animal to eat properly, groom themselves, and engage in natural behaviours. If left untreated, oral infections could spread through the bloodstream and affect vital organs, a serious risk, especially for older big cats with weakened immune systems.
At LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, specialised dental care helps prevent these complications and ensures its residents live comfortably. This focus reflects the broader message of World Oral Health Day: “Happy Mouths…Happy Life.” And here’s what happens behind the scenes when the veterinary team steps in to protect the oral health of the sanctuary’s big cats.
The Dental Procedures
Before the dental examination and procedure can begin, the animal must be immobilised and transported to the sanctuary’s on-site clinic. Once in the clinic, the team conducts a full oral examination and takes dental X-rays to detect fractures, infections, or issues hidden below the gum line.
If any of the teeth are too damaged or infected to be saved, an extraction will be performed. The veterinary dentist creates a gingival flap to access the tooth roots and then removes a portion of the surrounding bone to gain access to the deeply anchored root. This procedure takes time, patience, skill, and various dental equipment. After removal, the area is cleaned and flushed, and the gingival flap is sutured closed again to prevent food from becoming trapped and to promote proper healing.
If other teeth, particularly important canine teeth, can be preserved, a root canal treatment can be performed. This long-term solution begins with drilling into the damaged tooth, removing infected tissue, cleaning the canal, and sealing it to prevent further infection. Preserving these teeth is essential, as they play a key role in a big cat’s natural behaviours.
Ensuring Future Comfort & Well-being
Because every anaesthesia also carries a risk, the LIONSROCK team uses the time wisely by conducting a full health check. This includes blood and urine sampling, a thorough physical examination. Vaccinations, fluids, vitamin injections, and pain management are given if indicated. Their skin, fur, and claws are also assessed to ensure each animal receives complete, holistic care.
Specialised dental procedures like these are essential for the long-term health and comfort of rescued big cats. By relieving pain, preventing infection, and supporting overall wellness, LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary ensures its residents can continue to live the peaceful, healthy lives they deserve in their forever home.
