Tom and Samson
From Predator Park to Forever Home
Tom and Samson, two male lions, found a new home at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. Their journey is a heartwarming story of rescue and hope.
A Life Before LIONSROCK
Tom was born on April 5, 2010, and Samson on February 26, 2016, both at Seaview Predator Park in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. No human has ever touched Samson. Tom is Alpha male. No medical issues ever. Both carry the white lion gene. The case of Samson and Tom is not uncommon. The commercial trade with big cats is legal and out of control. In most parts of the world, including SA, big cats can be bred in captivity with the sole purpose of being used for profit, interactions, walks or kept as pets. In most cases, they endure a lifetime of suffering in cages, so different than their lives in the wild. They were part of the park's attractions, often used in tourist activities such as cub petting (Tom), walk-with opportunities, and for viewing purposes. Unfortunately, animals like Tom and Samson are sometimes subjected to inhumane practices, including trophy hunting.
The Rescue
In October 2021, Seaview Predator Park closed following a tragic incident involving a tiger attack. The park's owners decided to surrender Tom and Samson to the care of LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. On October 15, 2021, the two lions made the brave journey to their new home. This was not the first time LIONSROCK had taken in animals from Seaview, tigers Jasper and Jade had also been rescued.
Life at LIONSROCK
Since their arrival, Tom and Samson have been thriving at LIONSROCK. They have been living together since 2018, with Tom being Samson's uncle. The sanctuary provides them with a species-appropriate habitat, ensuring they have ample space to roam and explore. The dedicated team at LIONSROCK ensures that Tom and Samson receive the best possible care, including proper nutrition, enrichment activities, and veterinary attention.
At LIONSROCK, they are not just surviving, they are flourishing under the African sun, enjoying their new surroundings, and living a life free from exploitation.
