The Train Tigers
From confinement to freedom
The story of the Train Tigers Sandro, Mafalda, Messi, and Gustavo. These four Bengal tigers, once confined to a train carriage in San Luis, Argentina, have embarked on a journey of hope and healing, thanks to the efforts of FOUR PAWS and LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary.
For 15 years, Sandro (born 2004) and Mafalda (born 2007) lived in the cramped confines of a train carriage alongside their sons, Messi and Gustavo, born in 2011. Abandoned by a travelling circus, the tigers were cared for by the landowner, who did his best to provide for them despite the challenging circumstances. The tigers lived in challenging conditions without proper space, freedom, or care.
In March 2022, FOUR PAWS undertook its first rescue mission in South America, working tirelessly to free the Train Tigers from their confinement. The rescue was a logistical challenge, requiring weeks of preparation and close cooperation with Argentinian and South African authorities. After a journey of over 70 hours, the tigers arrived at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa, where they began their new lives.
At LIONSROCK, the tigers were initially placed in temporary enclosures to help them adapt to their new surroundings. Over time, they were moved to larger, species-appropriate enclosures designed to meet their unique needs. Sandro, the oldest of the group, was relocated to the Tiger Special Care Unit, where he receives specialised attention. Mafalda and Gustavo shared an enclosure, while Messi occupies his own space.
The tigers have shown remarkable progress in their rehabilitation. Sandro, who was initially aggressive due to fear, has become more relaxed and enjoys his enclosure. Messi and Gustavo have also adapted well, exploring their surroundings and embracing their new environment. Tragically, Mafalda's and Messi’s journey came to an end in 2024 due to health complications, a heartbreaking loss for the team at LIONSROCK.
Sandro and Gustavo continue to thrive at LIONSROCK under the African sun.
