The Starlight Tigers
From circus wagons to freedom
The rescue of the Starlight Tigers—Radja, Khan, Prinz, Shir-Khan, Pascha, and Douglas - is an inspiring tale of how sanctuaries like LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary can transform lives. These six tigers, once confined to the limits of circus life, have found freedom and a fresh start thanks to the tireless efforts of FOUR PAWS.
The tigers originated from various German circus companies, later sold to the Starlight Circus - a small family-run traveling circus. Radja (female, born February 26, 2004) and Khan (male, born September 21, 1999), along with their sons Prinz, Shir-Khan, Pascha, and Douglas (all born in 2005), were subjected to “usual” circus conditions. Living in wagons of approximately 20–25 square meters, the tigers endured confined spaces and were moved only for travel. While the circus visited around 30 to 40 venues annually, the tigers spent most of their time in their wagons, and during stops, were alternately allowed access to a small outdoor enclosure of about 100 square meters.
Although the tigers did not perform or undergo training, these conditions fell short of German minimum keeping standards, which require permanent access to outdoor enclosures and more space. Recognizing these shortcomings, the responsible veterinary authority partnered with FOUR PAWS to find an alternative solution. In November 2013, the tigers were handed over to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. This was a cooperative transfer rather than a confiscation. The agreement included a commitment from the circus not to acquire new big cats, marking a significant step in FOUR PAWS’ rescue policy.
Upon arriving at LIONSROCK, the tigers settled into enclosures tailored to their needs, each providing ample space and expert care. The brothers, Pascha and Douglas, currently share an enclosure, fostering companionship. The sanctuary offered the tigers a new lease on life, though their journey has not been without challenges.
Tragically, Prinz was euthanized in August 2023 due to advanced cancer. Khan followed in December 2023 after succumbing to kidney failure, and Shir-Khan’s sudden passing in March 2024 resulted from a ruptured tumour.
Despite these losses, the surviving tigers, including Pascha, Radja and Douglas, have adapted well to their new environment at LIONSROCK. The sanctuary's expansive species-appropriate environment and dedicated care have allowed them to experience freedoms previously denied in their circus lives. Their journey reflects the importance of sanctuaries in providing refuge for animals rescued from exploitation, ensuring their welfare and dignity.
These majestic tigers have been given the chance to live peacefully, surrounded by care and respect, a shining example of hope and the difference sanctuary can make.
