Lioness Ekira

Survival, loss, and sanctuary at LIONSROCK

2.5.2025

The journey of lions Leo and Ekira is a touching reminder of the challenges faced by big cats in captivity and the transformative role of sanctuaries like LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. Their story, marked by resilience and dedicated care, highlights the importance of providing a safe haven for animals in need.

Leo and Ekira were part of a pride rescued by FOUR PAWS from a zoo in Braila, Romania, in 2008. The group of nine lions, born in captivity, endured neglect and malnutrition due to the zoo's financial constraints. Upon their arrival at LIONSROCK, the lions began their journey toward recovery.

However, Leo's health took a turn for the worse in 2014 when he was diagnosed with a deficiency. This condition required intensive treatment, and he was hospitalised in Pretoria for specialised care. Despite the best efforts of veterinarians and caregivers, Leo's condition deteriorated, and he was sadly euthanised in 2017.

Ekira, Leo's companion, remained at LIONSROCK and was moved to the Special Care Unit (SCU) to ensure her well-being. In the SCU, she found companionship with another neigbouring lioness named Tokkelos. The SCU provides a tailored environment for lions with specific needs, allowing them to thrive under expert care. Ekira continues to live a peaceful life at LIONSROCK, surrounded by the care and attention she deserves.
