Lions Nikola and Vasylyna
A bond forged through rescue
Nikola and Vasylyna, lovingly called Nikolyna, have an incredible story that illustrates the impact of rescue and rehabilitation. These regal lions started their lives facing challenges but found hope and healing thanks to the determined efforts of FOUR PAWS.
Nikola's story began on September 10, 2021, in the village of Pobori near Budva, Montenegro. Born into captivity and kept illegally in a private household, his plight came to light on January 31, 2022, when FOUR PAWS was contacted by local NGO Center for Protection and Research of Birds of Montenegro (CZIP) and representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency of Montenegro (EPA).
The cub had escaped from the owner's property and was later captured by firefighters on February 10, prompting his confiscation. Temporary accommodations were arranged while authorities and FOUR PAWS worked tirelessly to ensure his future. In June 2022, Nikola was transferred to FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands, where his journey toward recovery began.
For Vasylyna, the path to safety was equally extraordinary. Born on August 24, 2021, in Ukraine, she was found on August 2022, roaming the streets of the war-torn village of Vysoke, Kharkiv. The lioness had escaped from private keeping, and authorities soon located the owner, convincing him to surrender the big cat. Temporary refuge was secured at the wild animal rescue station in Chubynske near Kyiv before her transfer to FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary on June 7, 2023.
At FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary, Nikola and Vasylyna were socialised and began to thrive in an environment dedicated to their well-being. Their bond grew, providing both lions with companionship and stability. In April 2024, their journey culminated in their transfer to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. On April 26, 2024, Nikola and Vasylyna arrived at LIONSROCK, their new forever home.
The efforts of FOUR PAWS in rescuing and rehabilitating Nikola and Vasylyna highlight the importance of protecting big cats from exploitation and captivity. Now living in a species-appropriate environment where they can roam freely and experience the natural world, Nikola and Vasylyna's lives have been transformed.
Nikola and Vasylyna’s remarkable rescue and rehabilitation highlight the importance of protecting big cats from poor captive environments and exploitation. Through the dedication of sanctuaries like FELIDA and LIONSROCK, these lions have been given a second chance at life.
