Lion Marin
A journey to freedom
At LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, Marin, a lion with a tumultuous past, now roams carefree in his species-appropriate enclosure. His journey from cruel captivity in Romania to the vast landscapes of LIONSROCK is due to the unwavering efforts of FOUR PAWS and the sanctuary’s commitment to providing rescued big cats with a life of dignity.
Marin’s story begins in Baia Mare, Romania, where he was born in 2003 alongside his brother, Tarhon. Their parents, Petrica and Lavinia, were originally bred for the Romanian state circus Globus, but their lives took a tragic turn when Petrica, under immense stress from harsh training, attacked his trainer. This incident led to the transfer of Petrica, Lavinia, and their daughter Lidia to Baia Mare Zoo in 2002. This is where Marin and Tarhon were born, in captivity, never being exposed to the freedom of the wild.
Baia Mare Zoo eventually closed after failing to meet the EU Zoo Directive standards, leaving Marin and his family in limbo. FOUR PAWS stepped in, negotiating tirelessly with authorities to secure a safe future for the lions. While awaiting their transfer, the lions were moved to a repurposed farm, where a dedicated local veterinarian ensured their well-being. During this time, Lidia suffered a severe eye injury, leading to the removal of her eye due to a dislocated lens and resultant Edema. Sadly, she could not be reintegrated with her family due to conflicts between the males.
After years of uncertainty, Marin and his family were finally relocated to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in 2015. Here, Marin experienced his first taste of freedom, stepping onto African soil and feeling the warmth of the sun without the confinement of a small area.
Sadly, Marin’s sister Lidia was euthanised in February 2022, and his brother Tarhon followed in April 2024.
Today, Marin continues to thrive at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. A forever home where he experiences carefree living.
