Rescue Tigers Shevar and Sharukh

Home at LIONSROCK after Emergency Rescue

8.4.2021

Days before a lockdown was announced in South Africa, FOUR PAWS was able to give a home to two tigers and three jackals at our project, LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary & Lodge. Together with multiple other organisations, a total of 150 animals have found species-appropriate homes across the country after the Bloemfontein Zoo closed down.

FOUR PAWS recently arrived at a closed down zoo for an emergency rescue, and we can now confirm that all of the animals are out of the zoo and in good, ethical homes. Two tiger brothers and three jackals have headed to their new home at LIONSROCK after being rescued from the Bloemfontein Zoo.

The zoo temporarily closed down in December 2019 and failed to keep their promise to continue feeding and taking care of some of the animals. When it became known that five animals died from starvation, FOUR PAWS organised an emergency intervention.

The beautiful tiger brothers, Shevar and Sharukh, are estimated to be about 8 years old.

Our veterinarian, Peter Caldwell, says they are in good health.

At this stage, very little is known about the histories of the jackals as there aren’t any documented histories available.

UPDATE: 27 March 2020

We can confirm to you that the zoo will now be permanently closed. Never again will these animals have to face an uncertain future!

UPDATE: 12 April 2020

We have named two of the three jackals that recently joined our family, after being rescued.

Thabo (meaning happiness in the local language) and Freedom have settled in very well at LIONSROCK.

UPDATE: 22 April 2020

The tribe has spoken!

Together with the help of you, our supporters, we have a name for our third jackal rescued from the Bloemfontein zoo. Lebo (meaning 'thankful' in the local native language in our area) was the preferred name of our supporters.

They have settled in very well at LIONSROCK and are healthy.

UPDATE: 8 April 2021

Just over a year ago tiger brothers Shevar and Sharukh were rescued from Bloemfontein Zoo & relocated to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, since their arrival they have settled in very well, and now enjoy a spacious new home where they love nothing more than cooling down in their pool and relaxing on their platforms observing the free ranging game nearby.

They are playful and friendly tigers who are big fans of enrichment and always engage positively with the items given, sometimes even mixing their activities by bringing their enrichment into the pool.

We look forward to sharing many more moments with them here at LIONSROCK.
