Volunteers at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary

The People Behind Second Chances

How volunteers help rescued big cats thrive at LIONSROCK

Bethlehem, 01 December 2026 – Behind every rescued lion, tiger and leopard at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary is a team of dedicated people working to ensure each animal can enjoy a life of safety, respect and specialised care. This International Volunteer Day, observed on 05 December, global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS is recognising the volunteers whose compassion and commitment help improve the lives of more than 80 rescued big cats at its sanctuary near Bethlehem.

Many of the animals at LIONSROCK were rescued from neglect, inappropriate keeping and exploitation in zoos, circuses and private ownership. Today, they live in spacious, species-appropriate habitats designed to support their natural behaviours and wellbeing, offering them the opportunity to enjoy a life that puts their welfare first.

Volunteers support the sanctuary team through behavioural observations, welfare monitoring, enrichment preparation and trail camera management. These activities help caretakers better understand the needs of individual animals while contributing to positive welfare outcomes and enhancing the quality of life of the animals in their care.

"Every rescued animal at LIONSROCK has a unique story, and volunteers play an important role in helping us write the next chapter. Through enrichment activities, behaviour and welfare monitoring, they help ensure our big cats receive tailored care where needed and enjoy the safe, species-appropriate environment they deserve."

Hildegard Pirker, Sanctuary Manager at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary

Unlike many wildlife experiences, volunteering at LIONSROCK does not involve direct contact with wild animals. Instead, volunteers contribute to meaningful animal welfare work while gaining valuable insight into responsible sanctuary management and the complex needs of rescued big cats.

The programme attracts people from diverse backgrounds who share a common goal: improving the lives of animals. Through their work, volunteers gain a deeper understanding of the welfare challenges faced by wild animals in captivity and often return home as advocates for compassionate animal care.

"Many of the animals who arrive at LIONSROCK come from situations where their needs were not adequately met. Animal welfare is about far more than providing food and shelter. It is about creating opportunities for animals to engage in natural behaviours, make choices and live with dignity. Volunteers help make this possible every day."

Hildegard Pirker, Sanctuary Manager at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary

For those inspired to make a difference, the LIONSROCK Volunteer Programme offers an opportunity to support the welfare of rescued big cats while learning more about animal care and protection. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have a passion for animals and nature and be willing to stay at the sanctuary for a minimum of four weeks. Students of biology, zoology and veterinary medicine are particularly encouraged to apply, although no specific qualifications are required.

Volunteers are accommodated on the sanctuary grounds where they share self-catering facilities.  While the 2026 volunteer programme is fully booked, limited veterinary externship and shadowing opportunities remain available. Prospective volunteers can submit a motivation letter and CV to park@lionsrock.org  and indicate their preferred period of participation.

"For many of our rescued animals, arriving at LIONSROCK is the first time they have experienced a life that respects their needs as wild animals. Our volunteers help us protect and nurture that second chance every day. On International Volunteer Day, we celebrate not only the impact they have on the lives of our animals, but also the compassion, dedication and commitment to animal welfare they bring to our sanctuary."

Hildegard Pirker, Sanctuary Manager at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary

As the largest FOUR PAWS big cat sanctuary, LIONSROCK is a testament to the impact that compassion, commitment and collective action can have on the lives of animals. This International Volunteer Day, FOUR PAWS honours the volunteers whose dedication helps give rescued big cats the opportunity to thrive while inspiring others to turn their passion for animal welfare into meaningful action.
