Animal Welfare Symposium
7-10 October 2025
The LIONSROCK Animal Welfare Symposium is a four-day immersive programme held at our Sanctuary, focused on promoting Animal Welfare while fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between animals, humans, and the environment. Through a range of engaging activities, you will discover the significance of “One Welfare,” where the well-being of animals, people, and the environment are intricately linked.
Programme Overview
What is animal welfare and why does it matter? Is animal welfare in conflict with the human welfare interest? How can environmental challenges facing agriculture and other natural resource-based enterprises be addressed without compromising the welfare of animals and people? How can animal and environmentally friendly consumption and production practices be positioned as central to the promotion of sustainable livelihoods?
Animal welfare and the broad nature of environmental issues present considerable complexity; being multi-dimensional and including several actors with diverse interests and needs. There is therefore, clearly a need for a wider collaboration as the needed changes and adaptation strategies exceed the capacity and capability of individual actors.
Framed under the theme: “Animal Welfare, Environment and Sustainable Livelihoods: An Impasse?”, the symposium will grapple with critical and often paradoxical questions relating to the nexus among animal welfare, human welfare and the environment. The interactive seminars led by subject matter experts will provide critical reflection moments for all participants to consider both science and values in decision-making.
