Leopard

Scientific name: Panthera pardus
Average shoulder height: 65 cm
Weight: Males: 20-82 kg
Females: 17-35 kg
Gestation period: 3 months
Life expectancy: over 20 years
Spoor: 7-12 cm

Appearance

Well built, with a long tail. Light golden-brown with black spots in a rosette pattern – 4 to 6 spots arranged in a circle.

Behavior

Mainly nocturnal, usually resting during the daytime in trees or thick bush. The Leopard is a very good tree climber and is able to haul even large prey up a tree. Good sense of smell and is very cunning and dangerous. Leopards are basically solitary and go out of their way to avoid one another.

Reproduction

A litter from two to tree cubs (occasionally up to 6) any time of the year. The female abandons her nomadic wandering until the cubs are large enough to accompany her. She keeps them hidden for about the first 8 weeks, giving them meat when they are 6 or 7 weeks old and suckling them for 3 months or longer.

Enclosure Leopards (size: 10 000 m2)
Two leopards are inhabiting this enclosure. The female was born at Stone Safari's in Free State Province. She was hand raised and purchased by the previous owners. She arrived here in February 2003. The male was captured from the wild in a trap as a problem animal and brought here in 2005 instead of killing him.
